I've just realized something monumental:
Platypuses and beavers are the same animal!
The platypus is just the female version of the beaver. The beaver is the male of the species. It's like male and female nidoran in pokemon. They look different because they're different genders.
Think about it: Have you ever seen a beaver lay an egg? Of course not! That's because the platypus is the one that lays all the eggs.
And that's why male body parts are sometimes called "beavers."
So why do we see beavers giving birth to live young? The answer is easy: cloning. Instead of metallergy or the industrial revolution, the beavers and platypuses chose cloning instead.
And finally, because they were tired of the endless mating needs of the beavers, all platypuses moved to Australia. And zoos.
Wow. I can't believe I didn't see the obvious relationship earlier.
